It’s Tuesday, and I’m back at my house, but I’ve been on the road since Saturday.
My wife and I drove our two boys out to Big Bear Lake, CA, to drop them off for Tilden Summer Camp. We were there a night, and we drove back to Phoenix on Sunday.
One of the highlights of that trip was discovering Dank Doughnuts. If you’re in Big Bear, it’s worth a visit. The doughnuts are delicious (the Maple Long John was the family’s favorite), but they also have a deli that makes sandwiches (I had the Farmhouse, and I would have it again).
My wife and I woke up early (3:00 AM early) on Monday and flew to San Francisco. The occasion was the funeral of my friend’s father. My friend is a cloistered Dominican nun, and she was given permission to travel. Her brother, a Dominican priest, celebrated the Mass at St. Dominic’s. A very Dominican day.
After the funeral Mass and reception (which served some sandwiches from Boudin), we were able to spend time with two friends. We walked to Golden Gate Park, and then Waymo-ed back to our cars.
Dinner on Monday night was at Cioppino’s. The delight for today was going to Jane the Bakery on Geary Street. That wasn’t planned, but I’m glad it happened, because it was food good enough to go back for the next time I’m in San Francisco. The muffaletta sandwich was delicious.
I thank God for family, great friends, and good sandwiches. And the Dominican order.
